What is NLPt?

Neuro Linguistic Psychotherapy & Counselling is a specialised form of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), based on the premise that we “construct” our own reality.

NLPt psychotherapist works on the basis that each one of us builds our own unique “models” or “maps” of the world around us and, although such maps are genuine and real to us as individuals, no one’s “map” is fully able to represent the “real world”. Most elements of our “maps of the world” are useful and work well for us, but some of our beliefs and behaviour patterns get in the way of our own progress and can make us feel “stuck” or out of control.

With NLPt, we can explore how people think in ways that are constructive and useful, model effective behaviours and identify successful strategies, and then apply these to improve our own lives.

Neuro Linguistic Psychotherapy & Counselling draws on concepts from many areas of psychology and psychotherapy. It helps us to understand how and why we do what we do, and to change those behaviour and thinking patterns that are unhelpful. It also assists us to develop a greater sense of self-control, recognise our own best qualities, and use them well.

A typical session will last about 1 hour, during which I will ask questions about the issues concerning you, encourage you to define your goals, notice your thoughts, feelings and mental images; perhaps to practise visualisation and relaxation techniques; sometimes we could use movement and sound, written worksheets and a variety of props to help explore your issues and find ways of resolving them. You may be asked to carry out some small tasks at home between sessions, for example: keep a journal or logbook, read an article, practise a particular technique, listen to a CD, or experiment with a new behaviour.

Appointments take place at my therapy practice in Glossop, High Peak (Derbyshire) - this is around 30-40 minutes drive or a train ride from the centre of Manchester. Online and telephone consultations may be available subject to suitability - please enquire. If you unsure whether I am the right therapist for you, I can offer a free initial telephone consultation of up to 20 minutes. You can also read examples of feedback from some of my previous clients.

If you are reading this, the process of change has probably already started for you.
