What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Re-processing) is a therapeutic approach that has been recommended by NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) for treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and has also been shown to be effective in relieving anxiety-related conditions, eating disorders and physical pain.

EMRD has been developed by an American clinical psychologist Dr Francine Shapiro in late 1980s. This therapy appears to directly impact on the brain's information processing function and helps to relieve the intense emotion of traumatic and distressing experiences. EMDR employs bi-lateral stimulation of the brain, which typically involves eye movements, tapping and sometimes sounds.

I have completed the full three-part accredited EMDR training (including Basic, Intermediate and Advanced) in 2009, as well as additional specialist training on using EMDR with children and adolescents, and its applications for complex trauma and attachment difficulties in adults. I am accredited practitioner with EMDR Europe. I use EMDR in my private practice as well as in my NHS psychotherapy work, and also have experience of working as a therapist within a research project studying the effectiveness of EMDR for treating depression.

I am able to offer reduced cost EMDR treatment sessions (subject to suitability) to children and adolescents, people on low income, war veterans and workers of emergency services traumatised in the course of their duties. My work is supervised by an experienced EMDR Consultant, as required by the Association.

Appointments take place at my therapy practice in Glossop, High Peak (Derbyshire)  - this is around 30-40 minutes drive or a train ride from the centre of Manchester. If you unsure whether I am the right therapist for you, I can offer a free initial telephone consultation of up to 20 minutes. You can also read examples of feedback from some of my previous clients.
