What is EFT?

EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a simple and effective self-help technique and a therapeutic tool, sometimes known as “acupuncture without needles”. It is one of the family of Meridian Therapies, which are part of the recent developments in Energy Psychology. EFT combines stimulation of a series of acupressure points with cognitive restructuring (specially worded affirmations) that often leads to rapid positive shifts in thinking patterns and emotional issues.

The basics of EFT can be learnt in minutes, and it can be applied to provide relief from a wide variety of emotional, mental and physical symptoms, including:

…and many other issues

Emotional Freedom Technique was developed in the 1990s in the US by Gary Craig, whose EFT website contains vast amount of free information, including a free 79 page manual, and where you can purchase Gary's excellent and very reasonably priced EFT training DVDs.

A typical session incorporating EFT will last about 1 hour, during which, as well as teaching you the EFT procedure, I will ask questions about the issues concerning you, encourage you to define your goals, possibly teach you visualisation and relaxation techniques; sometimes we could use movement and sound, written worksheets and a variety of props to help explore your issues and find ways of resolving them. You may be asked to carry out some small tasks at home between sessions, for example: practice EFT, keep a journal or logbook, read an article, listen to a CD or tape, or experiment with a new behaviour.

If you wish to learn more about using EFT for helping friends and family, you may want to attend a one-day training which follows the syllabus approved by Gary Craig and AAMET (Association for Advancement of Meridian Energy Techniques). If you are a professional and wish to train in EFT for helping your clients/patients, you can find more information on the EFT for Professionals page. Details of EFT training events open to the general public can be found on the EFT Training page.
