Problems with excess weight affect a lot of people, so if you have been struggling to achieve a healthy weight, you are certainly not alone. In England, most people can be classed as overweight or obese, including over 61% of adults and 30% of children. Health risks associated with being overweight include a higher likelihood of getting type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers. Research shows that excess weight can also make it more difficult for people to find and keep work, as well as affect self-esteem and mental health (Department of Health Policy Reducing Obesity and Improving Diet, March 2013)Treatment available
The treatment will involve a combination of hypnotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, neurolinguistic psychotherapy and emotional freedom techniques (this may or may not include Hypno-Band, a "virtual gastric band" treatment). A thorough assessment will be undertaken to evaluate your individual requirements and the treatment will be carefully designed according to your specific needs.
Important note: I am able to offer this weight management programme to people who are overweight or obese, with BMI of 26 upwards. (If you are unsure of your BMI you can use the calculator on the Hypno-Band website to work it out.) If you are of a normal weight (BMI up to 25), for ethical and safety reasons I will not be able to assist you with getting thin, as this can be damaging both physically and psychologically. However I can still help you to improve your relationship with food and your body image, and if you are diagnosed with or have a suspected eating disorder I can offer treatment for this too.
I have experienced my own struggles with weight and food so you can be assured that I can "step into your shoes" and offer understanding, non-judgement and gentle encouragement and support on your journey.
Please note that therapy for weight loss (including the Hypno-Band option) are not a quick fix and will require commitment and motivation on your part for the treatment to be successful.
Hypno-Band Weight Loss System
Several brands of "virtual gastric band" treatments are currently available in the UK and these are mostly based on similar principles and the main components of hypnotherapy and cognitive behavioural therapy. For the explanation of the Hypno-Band Weight Loss System which I am licensed to offer please visit the main Hypno-band website.
Is it a weight problem or an eating disorder?
If you are suffering with an eating disorder, such as bulimia nervosa or binge-eating disorder, it can be unhelpful and even dangerous to try to lose weight before the eating disorder and the relationship with food are fully addressed. I can offer treatment and support for eating disorder sufferers - if you are unsure whether you are affected by an eating disorder, please contact me for an informal confidential initial consultation. I have trained with the National Centre for Eating Disorders in 2005-06 (and assisted on the revised version of the training in 2013) on psychological interventions for obesity and eating disorders and am regularly invited as a guest trainer to teach Emotional Freedom Techniques at the Centre. I have also completed a number of postgraduate-level modules in Weight Management with Chester University in 2008-09, as well as being an "expert by experience" in dealing with my own weight and food issues.
Why diets are NOT a good idea
Appointments are available at my clinics in Glossop, High Peak (Derbyshire) or in Mossley (Lancashire) - both venues are around 30 minutes drive or a train ride from the centre of Manchester. Online and telephone consultations may be available subject to suitability - please enquire.
